Archival resurgence
It was usually assumed that the next night was the better show - even that it was the best show of the month [that's probably 8/14]. But this show didn't enter circ until 2008, and then only partially. Now that the full second set is available we find that this night is as good as the next (with its famed Hard to Handle), in fact the goods aren't concentrated in the first set. This Sunset Boulevard theater show was the second of a four-show jaunt to SoCal; the first three in L.A. and the last in San Diego. The only other SoCal show in '71 was a UCLA one-off in November. 10 songs are repeated the next night - 5 of the 1st set ones are better this night. This was billed as a "dance", not a concert, with "room to move"; much different than other shows this summer that had dancing forbidden! The show was added after the other three, and both nights featured opener NRPS.
First Set. Bertha starts with no mics. So when it's fixed, a few mins in, Jer starts the verses. Mr. Charlie has the rare "take it out on back/gonna tell your mama". Though El Paso is slowed, making it a little different, this is typical '71 fare until the That's it for the Other One suite. The next night has no Cryptical but here you get a full-blown, massive Tiftoo. Though October arguably has the year's best, this is the big one for summer '71. Melt, rock, meditation, bases covered. Wharf Rat goes nowhere but the perfect Casey Jones leaves 'em happy for the break, and the long jam puts this set at 2hrs.
Second Set. The beginning of Truckin' is clipped. Next is a spry, nimble, supernal Loser-SS that's maybe better than 8/23. Big Boss is lackluster (it's the next night that's pwned by Pig), but Sugar Magnolia is tight as hell, if straightforward/simple, and almost as good as 8/14. Though the '71 arrangement of Bird Song was more constrained, this is an exception. Very spacey, explorative, ticks all the boxes. Phil starts this Good Lovin'. "Start something Phil!". A huge Pig rap loses energy by the finish line. The beginning of Not Fade Away is clipped, but this sequence shines. Phil is so on the button this set. The stage is not left before Johnny B. Goode

Big Railroad Blues?
I was there and it was a great show but I'm confused.
Was Big Railroad Blues part of the show? It's not listed in the show sets but it seems to be one of the songs from the soundboard.
Also, two Garcia songs in a row would be unusual.
